Managing Scope Creep

Catch drift early, reset expectations kindly, and protect margin without sounding difficult.

Scope creep is rarely malicious. It is usually unclear language + friendly assumptions compounding over time.

Name the baseline

Your proposal or SOW is the baseline. Everything else is either included (explicitly) or a change. If you cannot point to the baseline, you cannot manage creep.

Use a polite interrupt pattern

Happy to add that. It is outside the current scope we agreed on for [milestone]. I can price it as Option A (fast) or Option B (thorough)—which direction do you want?

Tone

Assume good intent. Your goal is alignment, not winning an argument in Slack.

Make change orders lightweight

  • One-page change summary: what, why, impact, price, timeline
  • Written approval (even email) before starting extra work
  • Update the single source of truth (board, doc, or contract appendix)

If you repeatedly absorb creep “just this once,” you are discounting without telling anyone—including yourself.
